In the last episode of Sound of Gaming show this year, Jessica Curry has lots of various musical treats for the listeners.

Don’t tell me video games are a dumb culture.

Olivier Deriviere

This time her guest is composer Olivier Deriviere and his tracks from A Plague Tale: Innocence, GreedFall and 11-11 Memories Retold. They talk about interactivity of music in modern video games, why games have as great storytelling and emotional potential as literature, why they are still considered as stupid entertainment, and whether it is difficult to compose for such medium.

Curry quotes one of Deriviere’s Twitter posts, which goes: “I wrote music for games that were about slavery, dystopian future, family break down, colonialism, racism, psychological struggle and many more hard topics. Don’t tell me video games are a dumb culture. We are ‘l’enfant terrible’ of artistic expression and we will grow!” Very true words.

They talk about interactivity of music in modern video games.

She also explains why Jason Graves wanted the Dead Space score to sound like drums which is then followed by the dissonant blast of his Fly Me to the Aegis Seven Moon piece from that soundtrack.
