As Halloween is close, some of you is probably going to play a horror game or listen to some scary music. Personally I cannot wait to play the latest installment of The Dark Pictures Anthology titled House of Ashes, accompanied again with the amazing soundtrack by Jason Graves. Therefore I decided to make a playlist of ten frightening tracks from video games.

In the playlist below they can be heard for example in the highly acclaimed Dead Space, Outlast or Alien: Isolation.

As we know, a good horror film or game should scare the viewer/player not only by jumpscares and scary creatures but also with the audio. In most of the horror productions the tension is being built and held by the string instruments, or orchestra in general. In the playlist below they can be heard for example in the highly acclaimed Dead Space, Outlast or Alien: Isolation. The composition for the last one appears when we have to reset the generator in almost complete darkness, and then backtrack to the room where the Alien hunts for us, so it perfectly keeps us at the edge of sanity.

  1. Alien: Isolation – Escape From Habitation Decks
  2. F.E.A.R. – Separation
  3. F.E.A.R. – Horror Vator
  4. Dead Space – Severed Limbs are Hazardous Waste
  5. Outlast – Soldier Attack
  6. Outlast – Swarm Ambience
  7. Little Nightmares – Cornered
  8. Quake – The Hall of Souls
  9. Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs – Mors Praematura
  10. Silent Hill – All

Why is sound so important for horror games?

But also besides the unpleasant orchestral sounds, we have electronic and dark ambient pieces here, as in case of the phenomenal score for F.E.A.R., or the famous Quake in which the voice of Trent Reznor saying something that sounds like “I know you’re shaking” and the sound of tearing flesh make the listeners feel stunned even these days. Synthesizers can produce the sounds equally scary as the string passages, and the well made sound design adds a lot to the atmosphere of tension. Regardless I wish you a nice time spent listening to these scary themes, and many shivers on your back!
